Artist Biography
Ian Wilkinson
Born in Padiham, Lancashire 1962, Ian Wilkinson studied at Burnley College before completing a degree in fine art at North Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1983 where he graduated with first class honours.
After leaving college, Ian worked as a printmaker for professional print studios including Curwen Chilford, where he worked alongside Master Printer Stanley Jones, and Gresham Studio. Wilkinson later founded Limberhurst Press in Cambridgeshire with his wife Jan. He now lives in Leicestershire where he works as a Master Printer for Goldmark Atelier.
Wilkinson's inspiration comes from many different areas and aspects of his life. Much of his work is derived from travels to some specific places. Togo - to experience the birthplace of Voodoo. Sicily - to find out and discover the wealth of culture and history. Mexico - to experience the Day of the Dead Festival and visit the many temple sites and cenotes. Barcelona – to absorb the wealth of artistic culture; from Gaudi to Tapies, through to Miro and Picasso.
Working in various media including oil on canvas, silkscreen and etching, he often combines processes and techniques resulting in highly individual and tactile prints and paintings. Continuous experimentation with new materials constitutes a strong part of his work, giving it its own unique and constantly evolving identity.
Wilkinson’s work has been exhibited regularly in galleries up and down the country and he has work in private collections in England, Germany, U.S.A., Belgium, France, Eire, Japan, Greece and New Zealand.
He has also completed numerous large scale commissions over the years including; Autotype International, The Royal Windsor Hotel Brussels, Crowne Plaza Hotel Marlow, British Telecom, John Lewis and Cambridge Antibody Technology.
